The Project
The Zenteotl Project
initiated Fall 2008. The Project has centered its activities in Central neighborhood, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The
Zenteotl Project supports the developing multi-media performance,
Zenteotl: First Corn Energy, initiated by artist Deborah Ramos, 2006.
The inspiration for the performance, to premiere in 2011, takes root in
creation stories related to the historical and contemporary
significance of corn—
zentli—
in Mexico and surrounding nations.
Zenteotl: First Corn Energy comes at a crucial time, of climatic and
environmental transformation, in which it is important to remember the
origins of corn, and reclaim cultural and ancestral ties related to the existence of corn, for future generations. Corn would not have survived the last climatic shift had it
not been for the incessant work of Earth’s eldest inhabitants: ants.
Therefore, in the spirit of our tiniest teachers, Zenteotl—a
performance supported by community involvement—hopes to learn and
foster awareness on the current state of corn, the many ways in which
it is manipulated, and the communities that defend its integrity and
preservation.
